Memory
About this time, we see a shop across the street that has water and begin to head over there, when we notice the row of bricks running through the street.
These bricks mark the outer layer of the wall. The wall had an outer layer and an inner layer separated by about 100 yards, providing a corridor for the East Berliners to patrol. The entire wall was built inside Eastern territory to avoid territorial disputes.
There's so much fascinating information about the wall construction and history, and I was very glad we came here and saw it, and read about it. I was too young (and too not-interested) in 1989, and despite having written a report on it in junior high, I really don't remember much of this as it happened.
If you want to know more, there's no shortage of info on the web, or let me know and I'll be happy to discuss it.
