Too Expensive For Novelty

PeterE has a favorite produce shop in the market and we stop by to see what they have. Last week they had the first California peaches of the season, which were delicious. Peter picks up some heirloom tomatoes.

In fairness, he probably buys more than he needs, but that's excusable because of the extremely farmer-cute girl who is hawking them. She has huge blue eyes, with the whitest sclera I've ever seen. It's an odd detail to notice, but after my iritis I tend to notice the magnitude of whiteness in people's eyes.

They have Fiddlehead ferns, which are apparently tasty but are 15 bucks a pound and Sea Beans, also at that price. The ferns have to be cooked so we don't try them, but we do try the Sea Beans which really just taste like a salty, oceany, very thin string bean. It would make a great salad condiment/topping for some nice salt and crunch, but not at that price.

I do buy some purple carrots. Last week I got apples that weighed 0.75lbs apiece but they were just ok.

Some thoughts on expensive obcure vegetables:

I think Fiddlehead ferns are good, but way over-rated/over-expensive. They taste just like another green thing, not quite a green bean, not quite an asparagus. Mostly they are just really pretty. And they show their age easily, so you can tell by looking at them if they are really fresh -- this can make them an impressive restaurant vegetable.

Sea beans are good lightly pickled... and they are also pretty, but not necessarily worth $15/lb.

One other guy in this group that I tried recently was "crosnes" -- a tiny white pretty root thing. It has a neat crunch and decent flavor, but mostly it just seemed expensive and pretty.
