Zen? Consumables

I've mentioned my typical mid-morning snack of oatmeal, and if you have been around me at all over the last 7 years you'll know my breakfast is coffee and a balance bar. My REAL friends will know that this balance bar is Yogurt Honey Peanut. Thanks to a very stale specimen I had in Toronto, I also know to look for "arachides" if I ever need one in a French-speaking country...that carries them...and doesn't also have them labeled in English. This will probably not happen.

Anyway, I look at these as my "Zen" foods. I use "Zen" in quotes mostly because I don't really know what Zen means. I'm using it to mean relaxing and meditative. It probably means something significantly more complex, which is fine.

It's comfort food, but it's more than that. When I have my coffee and balance bar or oatmeal, I can slow everything else down, shut it all out, and just enjoy some quiet time. In NY, I would get to work a half-hour early sometimes, grab a seat by the window, put my feet up and sip away, watching the city below. There are few better ways to start the day for me.

The oatmeal often occurs in the middle of crazy mornings, and it's nice to be able to put everything on hold and sip something hot and delicious.

Also, it's good for you.

Does anybody else have these foods?

For me, it's actually a totally boring glass of water.

There's something really clear and awesome about cold water that makes me feel calm and "zen."
